The route is basically out and back.
Runners start opposite the Abbey and run through the square down to the A68 and now along the Bongate (A68) before turning right up past Woodend and the back of Riverside out onto the A698.The course then turns right for Kelso before looping left before Crailing on the B6400 to Nisbet turning right to go round Crailing church before coming back onto the A698 once again. After a wiggle round the lay-by the route continues on towards Kelso. Approximately one mile further on the runners turn right for Eckford and then left back to the A698 to start the return journey.
The route is virtually the same on the return except the wiggle round the lay-by at Crailing is omitted and instead of turning left past Woodend the runners continue on to Bonjedward before turning left onto the paved area alongside the A68, down past Riverside and finish on the grass by the river opposite Queen Mary’s house.

There are five water stations on the course, they are marked on the map above by WP1-5. The first is at a distance of 3 miles, the second at 5.8 miles, the third at 7.9 miles, the fourth at 10.2 miles and the final point is at the finish line.

Route height profile
The above chart is based on the intelligent analysis of data coming from GPS technology and measurement off O/S maps. As such the altitudes are indicative rather than being accurate to a specific plus or minus value. The positioning of all the survey points are very accurate however when transferred to the chart they are positioned to the nearest 100 metres.

The starting altitude above sea level is 250 feet. The highest point is at 306 feet some 56 feet higher than the start point and is at distance of 1.5 kilometres from the start.
The lowest point is at 174 feet and is first reached close to point 14 on the map above. On the return leg there is a final ascent from point 5 to point 18 on the map above, this equivalent of a rise from 186 to 272 feet (86 ft).
